Bad steering head bearings?

I think something is off with the front end of my Sportster (2007 model). At low speeds, especially when turning or coming to a stop, there's a slight notch or hesitation in the steering, a feeling almost like it wants to center itself a little too aggressively and the handling just feels a bit tight and not as smooth as it used to be.

I'm starting to suspect the steering head bearings might be the culprit, but I haven't torn it down yet, anyone experienced this before? trying to figure out if I'm looking at a simple clean and grease job or if it's time to replace the bearings altogether.

That notch feeling you describe is usually worn or brinelled steering head bearings. You can try cleaning and greasing first, but most times on an '07 it's replacement time. It has served you well and for long, don't you think? Hahaha let it rest man.

It's pretty common on older bikes like your 2007 Sportster, especially if the bearings havent been serviced in a while . Sometimes a clean and re-grease can smooth things out if they're not too far gone, but if you feel an actual notch or it's been like this for a while, there's a good chance they're pitted and need replacing.
