How to achieve the best fuel efficiency

I don't have a lot of experience with my Harley Davidson Sportster S, so I'm looking for some help. What is the best approach to achieving the best fuel efficiency? At which speed do you drive in which gear? I don't want to change too early and have the bike bog down, but I also don't want to rev it up too much and get poor mpg.
